Description
As part of Tanzania’s growing energy infrastructure, GIS Engineering & Environmental Services was contracted to support the installation of a high-pressure gas piping system at the Kinyerezi Gas Power Plant. This included complete design consultation, environmental risk management, and field supervision of the installation process. The project plays a critical role in the reliable delivery of natural gas to the power plant.
Client: Kinyerezi Gas Power Plant
Project Title: Gas Piping System Installation and Environmental Compliance Works
Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Sector: Power Generation & Gas Infrastructure
Service Category: Gas Piping Engineering, Environmental Assessment, Construction Supervisio
Problem
The expansion of the Kinyerezi power station required a safe and reliable gas transmission system, involving complex high-pressure gas piping across sensitive areas. The key challenges included:
-
Ground conditions requiring soil stabilization
-
Pipeline safety compliance (pressure testing, valve chambers)
-
Environmental impact on nearby wetlands and residential areas
-
Regulatory approvals from EWURA and NEM
Solution
GIS Engineering & Environmental Services delivered a turnkey gas piping solution with both engineering and environmental safeguards. Our scope included:
-
Full pipeline route design and alignment optimization
-
Structural and civil engineering support (trenching, anchoring, backfilling)
-
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and mitigation strategies
-
Supervision of welding, joint testing, and pressure certification
-
Development of a long-term inspection and maintenance plan
Process
-
Route Survey & Risk Assessment
Analyzed soil type, pressure zones, and potential environmental sensitivities along the pipeline corridor. -
Engineering Design & Pipe Specification
Designed pipeline layout with safety valves, anchor points, and corrosion protection layers. -
Regulatory Coordination
Engaged EWURA and NEMC for pipeline licensing, EIA approvals, and community awareness. -
On-Site Supervision
Managed trench excavation, pipeline laying, jointing, pressure testing, and backfilling. -
Final Testing & Handover
Conducted hydrostatic pressure tests and delivered compliance documentation and as-built drawings.
Results
-
On-time installation of gas piping infrastructure
-
Zero incidents during construction and testing
-
Full EWURA & NEMC certification granted
-
Optimized gas flow reliability for increased power plant efficiency
-
Improved long-term safety through pipeline monitoring design
